Sitting at the kitchen table with the news playing in the background, the reporter was talking about a “wave.” In those uncertain times, I took the reporter at his word and created “The First Wave.” The black sand represents uncertainty, and the turquoise blue represents hope and light. It was my grandfather who, upon seeing it, was the first to believe in me and encouraged me to complete the rest of the series. I ended up giving it to him. Today, this pastel still hangs in his living room, near his sofa, and it reminds me every time that even though we go through moments of uncertainty, sadness, and fear, they always eventually pass.
